Negotiating is a crucial skill for anyone running a business, but they don't teach this art in photography school. The Photographer's Guide to Negotiating gives specific tips for negotiating assignment deals, digital and electronic rights, stock photography sales, contracts, purchases, and more. Interviews with an art buyer, a photographer, and a photographer's rep give photographers extra insight-and maybe even the upper hand in many negotiations. Everyone negotiates in everyday life. This book shows photographers how to take those skills and successfully apply them to business deals.

5...An essential read for any photographer who wants to be successful...  May 06, 2007 By David Larson
...An essential read for any photographer who wants to be successful...

I bought this book because John Harrington recommended it to me recently. I must say that it has changed the way I do business. I have found all of my negotiation "deal breakers" and I have walked away from several jobs only to have the client come back and agree to MY TERMS.

My negotiation skills were mediorcre when I first started this book. Now when I am negotiating on the phone/email or in person I no longer feel unprepared.

I would recommend this book to any photographer who wants to sharpen their negotiation skills.

5Every photographer needs to know how to negotiate to be successful in marketing their services and skills  Dec 05, 2005 By Midwest Book Review
Every photographer needs to know how to negotiate to be successful in marketing their services and skills, but most photographer's guides focus on technique and marketing and devote only cursory attention to the finer art of negotiating prices and terms. That's why it's important to have The Photographer's Guide To Negotiating in hand for any business proposal: chapters review good negotiation traits and strategies, discuss issues on stock photo sales, contracts and assignments, and provide in-depth interviews with experienced negotiators.

5Terrific!  May 04, 2010 By R. Johnson "book monster"
I originally purchased this book a couple of months ago, along with a few others of various topics, to help me overcome a few weakness I had as a photographer. I read through it and found it very useful, and thorough, but being mainly a wedding photographer I hadn't been able to put much into practice since it mainly deals in commercial deals and such. But, just by reading through it and absorbing all the tips I felt more confident with how I dealt with pricing overall. Then a couple of weeks ago I got commissioned to do a big commercial photo deal and I automatically picked up this book, reread the parts pertaining to my current situation and it helped SO much! I am so glad I purchased this book. I definitely think I'll be using it many more times in the future!

5ESSENTIAL knowledge  May 07, 2009 By L. Peasley
If you plan on success with your photography business this, then this book is required reading. Negotiating requires MANY skills and no one person has all of them automatically, but we can develop them once we are aware of the lack.

The book is excellent reading, especially if you have a few contracts pending that you know you need to negotiate on. Anything from rights, to countering their claims of getting the work done cheaper, to other essential topics are included here. Even sections on negotiating stock photography fees and buying images yourself are put into their own chapters. Very little is stinted on and the read is worth the time and brain power needed.
