When it was completed in 1889, the Eiffel Tower was the highest structure in the world, measuring 300 meters (984 feet). Built for the World`s Fair, it was initially granted a 20-year permit; this permit was thankfully extended and now the Eiffel Tower is one of the world`s most famous structures, having become practically synonymous with Paris itself and receiving more than six million visitors annually.
This reprint explores the design and construction of this remarkable building; published in 1900 as a large folio by Gustave Eiffel himself in a limited edition of 500 copies, the original was never sold on the market it was exclusively given and donated by Eiffel. Featuring 53 double-page plates of 4.300 technical drawings explaining the design as well as 33 photographs of the construction, the book reveals the complex and fascinating process of bringing the Eiffel Tower to life. Though the technical drawing will especially appeal to designers wishing to discover the engineering genius behind Eiffel`s masterpiece, everyone can appreciate this very rare and special book about Paris`s glorious mascot. | | | |

Great for civil engineers Jun 18, 2009

Although I am interested in all aspects of one of my favorite man made landmarks, the iconic Eiffel Tower, I found this book to be a disappointment. Its impressive size (12X17 inches) makes it difficult to place on most bookshelves. Aside from that cosmetic problem, the pages within consist of three pages of historical data (albeit extremely fine print on large pages) in English, followed by 21 pages of the same text in various other languages. A sprinkling of fine photographs throughout this section of the book is cause for thumbing through these pages even if one does not speak German, French, Italian, Spanish or Chinese. What remains are 107 pages of extremely technical "blueprints" of the structure. Every bolt, beam and deco adornment is shown in intimate detail; some certainly of interest to anyone caring enough about the Eiffel Tower to buy the book, but most discernible only to someone with engineering skills. This volume is unique and a fine addition to many libraries, but for most looking for details and photographs documenting this beloved symbol of Paris, I would say, there are better choices. Had a review been available at the time I made my purchase of the book, I would have opted for a different publication.

Perfect for technical people Jul 21, 2010
By R. Williams I agree with the previous opinion that this book is short on text. In addition, it is printed in multiple languages in the same edition. (That's OK, I was not going to read it anyway)
This book is full of very interesting drawings that speak for themselves. It is absolutely amazing that this was done before the age of computers. The Eiffel Tower drawings from the 1890's speak a universal language and I highly recommend this book as a gift for any mechanical / technical person.
As with most coffee table books, it is oversize and not designed to fit on a shelf - put it out where people can enjoy!
One big book. Feb 02, 2012
By John R. Morefield I bought this as a gift for my son, who is an architect. He was impressed with its content. This is one big book. You will need a big bookcase.
