Stunning May 16, 2010 What you expect from Sony, stunning video, and the highest bit rate of all HD camcorders. This is my 3rd sony camcorder.Camera works perfectly.Works great with regular tapes,no need for HD tapes.Sony does it again.

Disappointed in SteadyShot Mar 22, 2010 I had a Sony standard-definition camcorder for many years that worked very well, and I decided it was time to get a high-def one. After reading the various reviews, I decided to get this one. While it works well otherwise, I've been very disappointed in the SteadyShot feature. As far as I can tell, it doesn't work. I have to be very careful to hold the camera extremely still, or else the resulting video is unpleasant to watch. I can tell no difference between the resulting video with SS turned on vs. with SS turned off. I didn't discover this until I first viewed a video on my TV more than 30 days after I bought the camera -- which was too late for J&R Music World to take it back. I contacted Sony support via Internet chat -- worthless. I then contacted Sony support via phone, and they agreed for me to send it to their repair facility. The repair facility then sent it back, saying nothing was wrong with it. It's possible that all high-def camcorders are this way, but I'm skeptical. It's also possible that my camera is indeed defective, and Sony warranty service is worthless. All I can say is that I'm very disappointed with the results, and I wouldn't buy this camcorder again...

SONY HDR-HC9 IS REALLY GREAT Mar 02, 2010 I been looking for a camcorder for 5 months and I did lots of research in that time, I was in favor of a Canon at first ( S D ). As I read more reviews then you can imagine the cons of low light recording and the noise of the unit( mini-tape ) was a major concern.
I found a web sight that had a video which a man explain everything you need to know about formats & media plus editting on a computer, for me a novice it was invaluable. I went for the Sony HDR-HC9 over a Canon that was similar and cost much less and I'am happy with my decision. The Sony ( H D )is super and I only did a sample recording in the house with only light from the outside and it was very good and the touch screen is nice for rewinding the tape to view what you just shot. Highly recommend this camcored.Amazon is great place to buy anything if you like the price. Stanley of Olney, Maryland ( 5 STARS not the 3 shown )

Outstanding buy Feb 01, 2010 Saved money over a new camera and it was in excellent shape and worked as good as the new product.

Specs Correction USB1.1 Not 2.0 Nov 24, 2009 I'm on the verge of buying this camcorder after much research. It has most of the same features of my superb 10-year old Sony DCR-TRV10 mini-DV digital camcorder, with the addition of USB connectivity - but note that I've posted to Amazon two links to specs for this item (one directly from Sony Style) that state it's USB 1.1 not 2.0. Hardly a show-stopper but not irrelevant. (Go to [...], type in the camcorder ID in the upper-right search bar, ENTER, click the picture link that appears, ignore the No Longer Available and click the QuickView to see the full spec list).
