Together with his cameraman Jared Mane and film editor Terrence "Otter" Ottman, he runs a tiny, independent production studio off (far off) the Sunset Strip, where the trio scrounges for crumbs and Davis puts off marrying the lovely struggling actress Susan Campbell. Enter Torsten Gross: enigmatic German director whose violent movies seem a little too real for Davis and his crew. After signing on to work for the filmmaker and his brutal leading man Lars Krieg on a horror flick, the boys are faced with a rash of actress suicides and a police investigation in the midst of a movie shoot unlike anything Hollywood could dream up. Now Davis must race to save those he cares about from the clutches of a man who will stop at nothing to finish production, as he unravels a mystery that will have him doubting the art of filmmaking...and reality itself. | | | |

Simply put, it's a good read Sep 12, 2011
By LoneStarReader Self-published novels have the reputation for being poorly edited, or just plain bad. I admit that I generally avoid self-published novels, since they haven't been vetted by the long-accepted editing process.
Therefore, it's always a pleasant surprise to find a self-published novel that's both well written and tightly edited. Second Unit is such a novel. I found it to be entertaining, plotted well, and a page turner. I enjoyed this one so much, I am surprised it was overlooked by the traditional publishing industry (assuming the author attempted to submit traditionally and didn't automatically go the self-pub route as so many writers are doing these days).
I recommend Second Unit for those readers who enjoy horror on the lite side. Simply put, it's a good read.
My Personal Favorite Jun 25, 2011
By Nik Holman (ConManWorkshop YouTube) I liked Second Unit from the moment I began reading it. Second Unit is like Scream if Scream kept being good. Second Unit is like The Other Guys but replace the jokes with disembowlments. The book takes us on a journey through the eyes of a group of young nobodies trying to make it in Hollywood, little do they realise their next gig for a Hollywood horror legend will result in a very real bodycount. The suspense is suspensful. The tension is tense. And you won't put this book down. The first in a rumored Box Office of Terror Trilogy, I can't wait for the second instalment, and after reading Second Unit, neither will you.
A Side of Hollywood You Never Knew Dec 28, 2010
By Abbie Faroukhtakin Everyone has heard the story of the struggling actor/actress trying to make it big in Hollywood, but what about the people behind the camera? There is a whole other world of people who will do anything to make it.
Davis, Jared and Ottor are just three guys who run a small time production company when a chance of a life time comes their way. Once they begin working with one of the biggest directors in the world, they notice that his methods are very unconventional. They need to decided what's more important, their careers or their lives.
Russell C Connor's characters are very likable and witty.
Two thumbs up! May 23, 2008
By Suburban Jedi As is the case with many others, this is also my second book to read from Russell C. Connor. And like his first book, Race the Night, this one did not disappoint. The book takes on an aura of comedy early on, and at many points, this feeling resurfaces, but make no mistake...the action is there and in full force, leaving you to marvel at new plot twists and guess at what happens next. The stereotypical "Hollywood slasher flick" aspects of the storyline, which Connor himself pokes fun at in the plot, are also enjoyable to read, and completely enhance the overall readability of the book (and aren't so predictable, like one would think...) The novel is wonderfully laid out, and very clean and streamlined. The action is well-written into the plot, so as to make a believable story out of something that is a little less (or maybe more?) real than our grasp on reality lets us accept. Connor writes the novel very fluidly, keeping consistency from one subplot to the next, and somehow makes the whole thing come together at one final point in the book...then wrap up with a sudden and surprising conclusion. You may think you have read these types of books before, but you haven't read anything like Second Unit. Buy it today!
Great second novel from Russell C. Connor May 02, 2008

"That guy"
This story follows a secondary film crew as they work on a new film by the fable german director, Torsten Gross. Gross's films are legenday in europe for their extremely graphic death scenes and spot on special effects.
The crew has to deal with Gross's ruthless work ethic, extreme eccentricity, and the fact that the actresses keep dying off after they complete their role in the film.
This book is a delight to read. It will chill you with it's descriptive, disturbing imagery. You find yourself effortlessly entralled with the characters, and rooting for Davis and Jared almost from the get go. The suspense builds and builds to a stunning climax that will not leave your thoughts for at least a month. You'll never look at hollywood special effects the same.
