The RODE VideoMic is a professional grade shotgun microphone. Based on the latest Film industry technology, the VideoMic is designed specifically for use with high quality digital video cameras. The microphone exhibits low noise and an unusually wide bandwidth for its size. It is ultra lightweight, yet rugged, due to it's ABS construction. The VideoMic is powered by a standard 9 V battery and offers a low battery LED status indicator and a switchable high pass filter to reduce unwanted low frequency rumble. The VideoMic attaches to any camcorder that has the standard camera-shoe fitting and utilizes a stereo mini jack for audio output.

3Rode VideoMic doesn't fit Canon HFS 100 Vixia camcorder  Jul 30, 2010
Watch Video Here: http://www.amazon.com/review/R20I2BXA6W55SO The Rode mic shoe adaptor doesn't fit the Canon HFS 100 HD Vixia camcorder.

I had to:

1. Remove the mic shoe adaptor completely and discard it
2. Make a shoe adaptor using strap iron, one bolt, four washers and three nuts
3. Raise the mic higher so the flash can open
4. Turn the mic base around to prevent casting flash shadows on the subjects

The sound quality is fantastic.

3Top sound, poor packaging  Jul 28, 2010
I used this with a Canon 5DmII, on a 3 weeks trip in Africa. Rough trip with dust, bumpy roads.

Sound: 5/5. Amazed by the sound quality. I had a backup wireless lapel microphone, I did not have to use it as from 10 meters away I could get very good voice separation/ capture. With strong wind I had to use a lapel wireless mic, as expected/planned.

Mounting 2/5: the mounting on the flash socket is fine, the mounting to the microphone stand broke easily just by hitting a branch, and the microphone now pivits around on the mouting... Fixed with duct tape.

Sound isolation elastic mounting 2/5: I did not hear any camera noise (focus, clicks,...) so the rubber band system is working well... except rubber bands cracked one after the other, at the first shock. Fixed with generic elastic rubber bands

Altough I am using this item in rouch conditions, I was expecring a more robust mounting and rubber bands... in the field, such weak points are an unwanted drag. If you want to travel rough with this item, take spare elasting rubber-bands and duct tape along!

Rode did not desapoint me in sound quality, but it did in mounting robustness.

3Warning! This mic will not fit on Canon DV camcorders with small hot shoe mount  Jul 23, 2010
I have a Canon HFS100 HD camcorder and bought this for it, only to find Canon's hot shoe adapter will not fit with this mic. There is a $30+ adapter you can purchase that appears to be outrageously priced. I wish I had known this before purchasing the Rode. Otherwise the mic works well. The rubber bands used to hold the mic to its adapter are cheap and several were already broken when I received the mic, but they include extras in the package. I expected higher quality from Rode as I've been a huge fan of their NT-1, but this item seems pretty cheaply made.

1absolutely worthless  Jul 14, 2010
i purchased this mic in hopes to make a relatively high quality recording, what i got was a better recording from a wireless mic from radio shack. If you spend over $10 for this microphone, your getting ripped off

5Thank You Rode  Jul 11, 2010
This microphone is a great buy! I bought it for personal use on my Panasonic HDC-TM300 and the sound quality is comparable to the much more expensive microphones I work with at film school. I was worried that the unbalanced stereo mini jack cable wouldn't allow me to get the mic far from the camera without a loss in sound quality like you can with a balanced XLR cable, but I was very happy after placing the Rode VideoMic on my makeshift boom pole with a 20' extension cable and still getting amazing audio. No other microphone comes close for the money.
