A collection of unique portraits by British born, New York based, fashion photographer Platon, which includes over 120 photographs constituting a unique and dynamic cross-section through the cult of fame and power. Platon's subjects are all leaders in their field and include Al Pacino, Bill Clinton, Vivienne Westwood, Leonard Cohen and David Beckham. A collection of unique portraits by British born, New York based, fashion photographer Platon. Over 120 photographs have been selected from an enormous range of powerful images taken over the last decade and together they constitute a unique and dynamic cross-section through the cult of fame and power. Platon's Republic is a window into today's media-led culture that bombards, and sometimes overwhelms, us with images of world-wide importance juxtaposed with frivolity. Platon's Republic replicates the same intense and sometimes surreal experience with portraits of Al Pacino, Bill Clinton, Vivienne Westwood, Leonard Cohen as well as more documentary photographs of Jesse Jackson and Bianca Jagger demonstrating against the death penalty and football supporters. Granted extraordinary access to some of the west's most powerful people, Platon's subjects are all leaders in their field. Whether they are from the TV industry, politicians, actors, fashion designers, writers or musicians, they all wield enormous influence within their arena. Platons' portraits are graphic and intimate, but the unusual angles and revealing expressions are his hallmark.

5Stunning images - every page a window into the soul  Jul 31, 2011 By Christine G. Adamo "Music Reviewer"
As I flipped through this coffee table book extraordinaire, I was greeted by stunning images of people as diverse as George Bush, Sr., and Pamela Anderson - and loved every minute of it!!!

Every page serves as a window into the soul of Platon's subjects...well known and not so well known - but all carrying a measure of celebrity in their own right. This is a beautiful, must-have collection of photographs of icons from the US (Samuel L. Jackson, Marilyn Manson & Donald Sutherland), UK (David Bekham and others) & neighboring countries (i.e., CANADA's premier poet laureate Leonard Cohen).

Neither this edition nor its subjects should be overlooked. Simply stunning!

1Platon's Mistake  Sep 09, 2011 By K. Mallaber
Thankfully this book is not too expensive as it is really bad. The paper and layout are both questionable but the photos are worse than that. About three of the photos are really great and the rest are not even good.

4Read the text, study the photos and appreciate. Great Book  Mar 11, 2010 By Ron Greer
There's more to this book than just low angle wide angle lens portraits. If one simply flips through the book, yes, one can come away thinking his work is simplistic and easy. His lighting style is very simple and I believe this is so he can concentrate on bringing his subject's personality out; which he does very well. Each image includes a description by Platon and this really helps bring the images to life.

Also, it's interesting to note that now, many years since the publication of this book, Platon is still (in 2010) doing all his work on film.

5Excactly what I've expected  Aug 29, 2008 By Karel Florian "KFL"
If you know Platon, you know exactly what you're buying. The photos are incredible and thanks to book size it's just a joy to go through them. Simple.

4Great book  Dec 03, 2008 By Hector L. Perez
The book is great. I love Platon's style and all the people he has photographed are impressive. The book came in slightly damaged and I can be sure that it was damaged before it was shipped because the book was bubble wrapped as tight as an egg. but the book itself is a great gift idea for any photographer.
