May have some good information. Jan 03, 2010
By Maria Camp The table of contents is not formatted in a visually appealing way. There is too much underlining and it contains page numbers - a useless inclusion for a Kindle edition.
A good explanation of the concept of layers is provided.
their/there
This is used incorrectly a couple of times and is distracting.
A free, open-source software program called GIMP is discussed. I have not yet tried it, but it sounds like it may have some promising applications.
On some of the graphics, too much text was included as part of the graphic and something about this made the text appear in a very light gray which was hard to read.
Some pages of this book displayed poorly and I have to wonder whether the authors have gone through this book on a real Kindle or whether it was just viewed using a preview on DTP.
When you view this book in the Kindle store, you see a cover; however, once you get it on the Kindle, there is no cover. This is ironic given the nature of the book.
Some helpful web sites are included, both for royalty-free graphics and for other resources.

Warning: This is not about making ebook covers! Oct 23, 2011
By Rayne
"Rayne"
I purchased this book from Amazon.co.uk.
I bought it expecting to learn how to create an ebook cover. Alas, this isn't what it's about! The title is misleading.
The book give step-by-step instructions how to use GIMP software to create something - but that something isn't an ebook cover.
It's a three dimensional drawing of a cornflakes box. On one side of the box, there is indeed a cover picture, distorted by perspective.
The instructions would be really good for someone who wants to design cornflakes boxes. Or detergent boxes. Or boxes and packaging for anything. Just not for someone wanting an ebook cover.
Ebook covers are flat two-dimensional rectangular designs. Not three dimensional boxes.
Perhaps the author really doesn't know what an ebook cover is and what it should look like. In this case, he should have done some basic research, such as a quick glance through Amazon, where he could see thousands of ebook covers (flat two-dimensional rectangular pieces, not three dimensional boxes).
Or perhaps he thinks that a box will make it look like a 'real' book, ignoring the fact that real books also have flat two-dimensional rectangular covers.
The bizarre thing is that the ebook cover for this ebook is a real cover (flat, two-dimensional, rectangular). For his own ebook, this author didn't use a three dimensional box!
Clearly, he knows what an ebook cover is, and what's required, and he still tries to get everyone else to create something inappropriate!
I'm angry that he deliberately misleads people into doing what he himself wouldn't do.
And the book isn't cheap.
For being deliberately misleading, this book deserves a very low rating. I'm giving it two stars, because it's well-written and the instructions are clear. If someone wishes to design a box-type cover, this book will be useful.
But for someone wanting to design an ebook cover to upload at Amazon and other ebook publishing, retail and review sites, it's useless.
Since this book wasn't cheap, I asked for, and received, a refund from Amazon.co.uk.
