5Effective Persuasion Tools and Why they work!  Jul 19, 2010
Learning from this book is like drinking from a fire-hose. This is better than any of the dozens of sales books I have read because the authors demonstrate tactics that really work. Not only will you learn amazing tactics, you will learn why they work. This helped me make the tactics my own.

From this book I learned HOW people make buying decisions, what really drives people to buy. Two weeks after buying this book, with this knowledge, I developed my own tactic that DOUBLED my number of prospects wanting follow up appointments. My biggest problem became having too many "Take Action" appointments instead of finding people to meet with.

I have been in financial sales for eight years; nothing else I have ever read even comes close to the dramatic impact of Covert Persuasion. I want my peers to have the benefit of this book; but they will have to buy their own copy.

5Praise For Covert Persuasion  May 28, 2010
I really enjoyed this book for several reasons. It gives you some great background on how to use the covert tactics. Kevin Hogan explains in detail the covert persuasion tactics.

In the book they talk about changing peoples beliefs. Not only do they talk about changing beliefs but they tell you how to do it. I was really impressed with the hypnotic language patterns and am trying to incorporate it in my sales process.

The worksheets in the back of the book are invaluable. I made copies of these and put them in my notebook where I can review them constantly.

3Covertly persuading you to like this book  Apr 15, 2010
Not much could be more foreboding than an introduction that was more marketing than introductory. One can't help but wonder if the reason the book has to be promoted so much is because it actually can't stay up on its own merit.

In saying that Covert Persuasion wasn't an awful non-fiction piece, but it was definitely lacking. With awkward prose and the worst use of examples I've ever seen (they used firefighters rushing to help with the World Trade Centre attacks as an example of buyer's remorse.) The book is essentially psyc 101 + marketing 102 written out.

The book begins in chapter format and then midpoint becomes a 55 point list, and never quite gets out of the boring style of list a phenomenon, define and give an example. Also the book kinda departs of its central thesis half the time; while many of the techniques explained could be persuasive most of time it just feels like an interesting psychological fact.

In a spasm of irony the book itself is too much a work of persuasion, full of self-promotion and advertising. Many of the first points made (piece of advice, if your book is flawed at least shove the flaws till later so that people aren't turned off as soon as they open the thing) end unfinished with a website address or a `buy this brilliant other book to learn about it'. The most annoying part was when one of authors told a story about themselves earning far too much money and inserted parenthesis to explain how awesome they were. `See how I used self-deprecation there?' the author says while explaining how they asked for 5000 for one talk.

I'm not an expert on the marketing texts out there, but I suspect this book would be a good boost if you're a salesperson in need of a little inspiration. However if you're anything like me needing to persuade people to do the neigh on impossible, such as convincing employers to hire people with intellectual disabilities, then this book doesn't quite cut the cake.

2Format Nightmare  Jan 24, 2010
Although I've only read a little of the book I can tell you, DO NOT BUY THIS!!!! When reading this, the first thing you have to do is shrink the the font size way down unless you only want about 15 words per page. Even then it looks like someone hit the tab key after every word. I really don't know why Amazon sells books that were formatted so poorly, hopefully they'll get their act together soon.

5In Depth Ideas For Improving Sales and Attitude  Dec 24, 2009
My disclaimer: As with any opinion, it is only my opinion and these reviews will vary depending on who reads the book and what the reader is looking for. I look for ways to improve businesses, this book shares many ideas and gives many applicable take-a-ways.

On a 1 to 5 scale, 5 being the best:

Readability: 5 I read through this book in one sitting. I was sitting at an airport 830 miles away from home and it really helped passed the time. It is enjoyable to read.

Information and
new ideas: 5 The book is loaded with great ideas. It will certainly get your brain started if you're looking for ideas to improve your business.

Applicable Ideas: 5 There are plenty of ideas that can be used with just a little innovation.

Value: 5 I would have paid more and I am thinking of sending the authors and additional check.

I give it 5 overall. I bought the book because I was specifically looking for ideas to help me with sales process development. It delivered and the book will remain in my collection.

Keep up the good work Mr.Hogan and Mr. Speakman!
