4WOW! What a treat!  Nov 26, 2008 By Kevin W. Garrison
Based on the photo on the cover of this book, I was skeptical to purchase it. Not much information as to the contents. I was not looking for "Victorian era packaging". However, I was very happy with the contents. All of the packaging is printed on paper or cardboard. I am a graphic designer and this type of reference is eye candy that is as good as chocolate! The typography (and combination of) is amazing. It includes spreads that show the full package on one side and a detail on the other. The photography is beautiful. Awesome colors. The collection of products is diverse and includes pharmacy, audio visual, personal care, dressmaking, office, entertainment, car elements, perfume industry, domestic, food and tabacco. Most are international in language. If you are looking for a book to add to your collection, I give this one high marks. And as far as reading... of the 400 pages a combined 3 make up the copy. The rest are photos of packaging.

2Breathtakingly beautiful packaging, heartbreakingly bad art direction  May 27, 2010 By Michael R. Kellner
The packaging in this book is wonderful, it was a terrific idea to photograph it and make a reference book of it. Unfortunately the execution leaves a lot to be desired. The photographs generally combine an overall product shot with a detail shot. If the photographs simply reproduced the art of the packages this would be an incredibly valuable resource. Unfortunately, someone decided to get "artsy" with this book. For example, the images are almost all at annoying angles. While this allows the sides of packages to be seen, they are usually devoid of interest. Most of the shots that show the complete product are printed very small on the page. The detail shots should be the real goldmine here, but they are even more frustrating! Almost every single detail shot is of a random expanse of the surface with no thought to composition. The art is cropped infuriatingly. In some cases the photographer used wretched depth of field to make most of the image out of focus. Take the image on the book cover and rotate it to an arbitrary angle and this is what you will find inside: frustrating fragments of magnificent packaging that deserves less heavy-handed art direction.

5Antique Packaging Book  Jan 18, 2012 By Juan D.
Image driven book. Shows entire packages and close ups of labels. Broken down into categories i.e. pharmacy, perfumes, etc. Very helpful reference when designing anything to have vintage/worn/classic feel.

5What a gift!  Nov 11, 2010 By L. Frisch "av club mistress"
I got this book as a gift and what a treat it is! First of all, it has this wonderful heft and compact size that just makes you want to carry it around for a while before looking in it, as if its construction reveals something about its subject. Inside are over 1.5 inches of beautifully composed photos and closeups, without captioning and only a few pages of informative prose. Just when I think I might be flipping through the last few pages of this book, I am delighted to start a new chapter. I usually like textbook type books and only dabble in graphic design, but this is all photos; a wonderful reprieve from my busy world of bureaucracy. It doesn't seek to provide you with anything other than inspiration in the artfully staged photographs and thoughtfully chosen closeup views. There is something very tactile about the editing. It feels like I've collected the items myself and stored them in this book - my very own collection of these wonderful packages, but no need to comb eBay or flea markets or to argue with a loved one about where to keep it all!
