The Integration AND the Features Are Outstanding Jan 03, 2009 This is a bit difficult to write because of how MUCH this software suite has in it. To start with, I can't imagine a better software suite for Windows that does what this one can. I purchased it mainly due to the new Canon DSLR which has 1080p HD video now, even though my main tool has been Photoshop... but now there's VIDEO to deal with! Plus I needed a powerful sound editor. So the upgrade choice was easy.
BTW, you need this upsell version if you own a standalone product (Photoshop or Premiere). The cheaper upgrade is for owners of previous suites.
OK, quick breakdown:
*Photoshop CS4: WOW, what an improvement over CS2 and CS3! Best features: CS4 utilizes OpenGL which basically means Photoshop now uses your video card for horsepower. You can see a perfect image now at ANY view level, not just 25/50/100%! And since your graphics card is now used, Photoshop CS4 is FASTER. And with the Clone Tool you can see what will be put down on the image inside the tool's circle, BEFORE you press the mouse. Talk about an easy way to line up the edit! These are some of the advantages of OpenGL, but there are more. There's also the new Adjustment Layer panel, a totally oragnized non-destructive workflow for most adjustments. And the adjustment panel stays off to the side so you can view the edit as you work, no more "always on top" panel over the image. One new feature I really like is the new Preserve Tones algorithm in the Dodge and Burn tools. You can actually Dodge and Burn and have it look outstanding, not damaged now! Camera RAW 5.0 has several new features, but the best has to be the Adjustment Brush (that's right! In ACR!). As far as Bridge, it's the best one by far, especially the navigation improvements. Still doesn't have robust DRM, but I personally don't need software to manage my digital files.
* Premiere Pro CS4: I'm new to Premiere, so I won't be able to give info to the experienced user. However, in doing a few test projects, the flexibility of doing edits on your assets is astounding. The UI is very well laid out (at least for me). The integration is VERY tight also: I had a video clip in my timeline, and I was able to right-click on just the audio track of the video clip and send that audio to Soundbooth CS4. In Soundbooth, I did the necessary fade I needed plus added some convoluted reverb, saved my changes, and whammo, my audio in my video clip was fixed. Doesn't get much easier!
*Soundbooth CS4: I've dealt with multitrack recording for years and am familiar with wave editors. Soundbooth CS4 is the easiest and most powerful editor I've used. I haven't read the manual yet, but already I've set up effects racks, trimmed WAV files, added effects where needed on a dry recording, and even made a 32.1 second audio file fit into 30 seconds without pitch change. Standard features probably, but I did this with no manual. The user interface is very fluid. And the effects sound GOOD. I've read that you can search for words in an audio file of speech, just haven't tried it yet.
*The Rest: I look forward to using Flash and Illustrator, but as of right now I can't offer a review, sorry. Encore is a breeze to work with, and Encoder works quite well (so far), churning out MP4 video from the Canon 5D Mark II's H.264 MOV files.
The speed of the CS4 apps I've used has been a welcomed feature. For those wanting a benchmark, I run a slightly older laptop, Dell E1705 from late 2006, 2.0GHz Core 2 Duo with 4GB ram and a 256mb NVidia 7900 GS. Photoshop screams just fine, but what I have isn't enough for full HD video in Premiere. You'll want at least a 3.0GHz Quad Core or Extreme processor and dual 10K RPM drives in RAID 0 in addition to your main drive with the OS. Photoshop CS4 is native 64-bit, the rest are certified to run on it.
I'll post more in the future to add to this review as I work more with it.
